Offense Shines Once Again as Wolves Complete 4-0 Weekend

Nunn Drives in Nine as Wolves put up 25 Runs

Newberry, S.C. - After scoring 19 runs in their first two games against Concord and Chowan on Saturday, the Newberry Softball Team upped the ante as they plated 25 runs across two games as they completed a perfect opening weekend by defeating Concord 13-9 and Chowan 12-0. The Wolves moved to a perfect 4-0 on the season, their third 4-0 start in the last four seasons.

Newberry 13, Concord 9
After the teams combined to score 16 runs in their meeting on Saturday. Concord and Newberry nearly exceeded that mark on Sunday in just the first two innings alone.

The Mountain Lions would open the scoring after back to back walks put two runners on with nobody out, however it seemed Newberry would be given a lifeline as Mallena Wright would catch a fly ball and throw a dart to Hailey Hill at third base to complete the double play. However, three straight singles by Concord would make it a 2-0 Mountain Lion lead after half an inning of play.

After recording an outfield assist in the top half of the inning, Mallena Wright would open the scoring in the bottom half as she would lace a double to center field and advance to third on a fielding error. Wright would score a pitch later thanks to a wild pitch to cut the Concord lead in half. After a Tori Rose fly out and a Lindsey Mitchell groundout, the Wolves' bats came to life as back to back singles by Hannah Towery and Hailey Hill set up Emily Hughes who would reach on an error to load the bases for Tedi Nunn. Nunn would lace a double of her own to clear the bases and suddenly the Wolves had a 4-2 lead.

Concord would strike back in the top of the second as Brittany Crowson would walk two more Mountain Lions and have a wild pitch to advance one of the runners and that would be the end of the afternoon for her as she was relieved by Alexandrea Sullivan. Sullivan would walk the first batter she faced to load the bases. That was followed by a Kylee Stacy single to plate a run and then Sarah Thompson would record a sacrifice fly that would end up scoring another run on an errant throw and Mountain Lions had the lead back at 5-4.

The Wolves would answer back with a six spot in the bottom of the frame as Kasey Widmyer would get the inning started followed by a Tori Rose walk. The two would come around to score on an error by the right fielder off the bat of Lindsey Mitchell to give Newberry the lead right back. Hannah Towery would drive in Mitchell with a single to make it 7-5. Emily Hughes would rope a triple to right field scoring hill and Hughes would be brought home by a Tedi Nunn double down the left field line and the Wolves had put double digits on the board again against the Mountain Lions as they lead 10-5 after two innings

Both teams' bats would fall silent in the third inning but would come back in the fourth as the Mountain Lions would get two back to make it 10-7. But Lindsey Mitchell would get one of those runs right back as she would crush a ball that would clear the scoreboard at the Smith Road Complex on the second pitch of the frame to make it 11-7.

Both teams would go quietly in the fifth and Concord would once again get two back in the sixth and the Wolves would respond in kind as well, just as they did in the fourth. Hannah Towery walked to open the frame and advanced to third on a Hailey Hill double, they would both be brought home by a Tedi Nunn single to make it 13-9.

In the top of the seventh, the Mountain Lions would get the leadoff runner on but would have it wiped away a pitch later as she would get caught leaving early trying to tag up on a fly out to Mallena Wright, resulting in a double play. However, Concord would have one last push as they would load the bases but Alexandrea Sullivan would slam the door as she struck Kylee Stacy out swinging to secure the 13-9 victory.

Newberry 12, Chowan 0 - F/5 Innings
The Newberry offense remained hot as they would score in all four frames they would bat in. Lindsey Mitchell would get the scoring started with a double to center field, scoring Tori Rose who singled the batter before. After a Hannah Towery single, Mackenzie Turner would force an error by the Hawks defense on a ball hit to left field, scoring both Mitchell and Towery and Newberry led 3-0 after one inning of play.

After Kasey Widmyer sent Chowan down in order in the top of the second, Emily Hughes would double to open the home half and advance on a passed ball before Widmyer helped her own cause with an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0. After Mallena Wright was hit by a pitch, a Lindsey Mitchell groundout would move Wright and Widmyer into scoring position for Hannah Towery who would plate both of them with an RBI single of her own and the Wolves' lead was doubled after the second at 6-0.

Widmyer made short work of the Hawks in the top of the third and Newberry would pick up the offense once again as Turner would open the home half with a double and would reach third on a pass ball. Tedi Nunn would bring her home with an RBI groundout. That's when Widmyer stepped to the plate and would crush her third home run of the weekend and give her her ninth RBI of the weekend, tying her with Tedi Nunn for most on the team this weekend, and give her team an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sierra Brogdon, who had entered the game in the top half of the inning, walked to open the frame. She was brought home on a Hannah Towery RBI double and Towery would get to third on the throw home. After a Lindsey Foster walk, Mackenzie Turner would rope a double to score Towery to make it 10-0. Turner would pinch run for by Amber Dalfonso and Tedi Nunn would bring both Foster and Dalfonso home with an RBI double, Nunn's eighth and ninth RBI of the weekend.

After another stellar outing in the circle, Kasey Widmyer was relieved by Lindsey Foster in the top of the fifth and she would send the Hawks down in order to end the game and give the Scarlet and Gray a perfect 4-0 weekend.

"I'm proud of our team's effort across the whole weekend," said Head Coach Ciria Triplett. "It was great to see our momentum from Saturday carry into today and to see the team battle the way they did against Chowan yesterday and Concord today."

The Wolves are right back at home at the Smith Road Complex as they will play host to the North Greenville Crusaders in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 PM and 4 PM. After those games, the Wolves will head down to St. Augustine, Fla. to face Saint Leo and Flagler on both Saturday and Sunday.
