Widmyer Leads Wolves to Opening Day Sweep of Concord and Chowan

Junior Strikes Out Seven and Hits Two Home Runs in Opening Twin Bill

Newberry, S.C. - Kasey Widmyer took a 1-1 pitch from Chowan's Megan Vincent and deposited it into the cars parked just behind the left center field fence at the Smith Road Complex as the Newberry Softball Team completed the opening day sweep of the Concord Mountain Lions and the Chowan Hawks. Widmyer's walk-off home run gave the Wolves the come from behind 5-3 victory against the Hawks after dispatching Concord 14-2 earlier in the morning in five innings in which Widmyer was also the winning pitcher and hit another home run. The two wins marked the seventh straight season in which the Scarlet and Gray have won their first two games of the season and the 17th straight season in which they have won at least one of their first two contests.

Newberry 14, Concord 2 (F/5):
The Wolves started their season against the Concord Mountain Lions and although the temperatures at the Smith Road Complex were frigid, the Wolves bats came out hot to start the season. Every Newberry player that started the game would reach base at least one and the Wolves would score in every inning that they would have an at-bat in, including a four-run second inning and a six-run third inning.

After Widmyer worked out of a bases loaded, one-one jam by only giving up one run and striking out two, Sierra Brogdon would tie the game as she would rope a single down the left field line scoring Mallena Wright who had walked to start the inning and was moved into scoring position by a Tori Rose sacrifice bunt.

Lindsey Mitchell would get the four-run rally started in the second with another leadoff walk. She would then advance on a pass ball. After a Vanessa Wilson strikeout and Tedi Nunn battled for a walk, Widmyer would help her own cause with a double that would score Mitchell and advance Nunn to second, giving the Wolves their first lead of the season at 2-1. The very next batter, Mallena Wright would lace a triple that would clear the bases. However, the throw to third was off-line and would allow Wright to score and the Wolves led 5-1.

Concord would get one back in the top half of the third but the Wolves would respond with six runs of their own, highlighted by a Kasey Widmyer three-run blast to left field to give the Wolves an 8-2 lead. Later in the inning, Sierra Brogdon would record her second RBI single of the game to score Mallena Wright. Hannah Towery followed with an RBI Single of her own to score Leah Evans, who pinch ran for Brogdon, and Mackenzie Turner would cap the inning with her own RBI single and the Wolves lead had grown to 11-2 after three.

The Wolves would cap the scoring onslaught in the bottom of the fourth with a Hailey Hill three-run home run to increase the lead to 14-2 which is where the scoring would end after the Wolves would retire the Mountain Lions easily in the top of the fifth, capped by Widmyer's seventh strikeout of the game.

Newberry 5, Chowan 3:
The second game of the afternoon was a night and day difference in terms of offensive fireworks with each team only managing a couple of base runners for the first three innings of the game. Alexandrea Sullivan would lead the way in the circle with six strikeouts in the first four innings and would send the Hawks down in order in the third and fourth innings.

The Wolves would strike first in the bottom of the fourth as Hannah Towery would deposit a sharp double down the left field line, her third hit of the doubleheader. She would be replaced on the basepaths by Christine Butler who would come around and score the next batter on a Lindsey Mitchell RBI single. That would be all the Wolves would get as Megan Vincent was matching Sullivan blow for blow.

Sullivan, however, would find her first bit of trouble in the top of the fifth. After a 9-3 putout to start the inning Sullivan would give up a double, single, and a walk and suddenly the Hawks had the bases loaded with only one out. Sullivan would fight back and strike Kaitlyn Matheny out swinging but would give up a soft contact single to Paige Wilhelm to tie the game at one. Sullivan would limit the damage as she would strike out the next batter on five pitches.

The Wolves would get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth after a Mallena Wright double but couldn't convert. The Hawks would waste no time to respond as after a walk to Hannah Eden, Kaitlin Burnelli would send a ball beyond the left center fence to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

The Wolves would answer right back in the bottom half of the sixth as Hannah Towery would take the first pitch of the inning deep to dead center and the Wolves had cut the Hawks' lead in half. In the top half of the seventh, Sullivan would bounce back after a couple of tough innings to send the Hawks down in four batters and set up an opportunity for the Wolves to walk it off on opening day.

Tedi Nunn opened the frame with a single right back to the pitcher and Madison Truett would attempt to get her over via a sacrifice bunt but the ball was misplayed by Chowan and the Wolves were in business with the winning run on first base and nobody out. The Wolves would get the winning run into scoring position as Nunn would steal third and Truett would take second on the throw, setting the moment for Kasey Widmyer to cap her outstanding afternoon with a walk off. Widmyer would take full advantage of that opportunity as she would drive her second home run of the afternoon to center field and the Wolves would emerge victorious with a hard fought come from behind win.

Up Next:
