Wolves Women Eying Five Straight Home Wins Saturday at Eleazer

Newberry hosts Tusculum in a conference matchup

Newberry, S.C. (February 4, 2022) - After a convincing victory over nationally ranked Wingate on Wednesday night, The Newberry Women's basketball team seeks to win five straight at home as they welcome the Pioneers of Tusculum University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 5), inside Eleazer Arena.

MATCHUP HISTORY

Saturday's matchup marks the 54th meeting all-time between Newberry and Tusculum's Women's basketball programs. Their last matchup came earlier this season (Dec. 15), with Newberry losing by 10 points (71-61) on the road at Tusculum. The Wolves are 24-30 all-time against the Pioneers. Tusculum goes into this matchup having won the last three games against Newberry dating back to 2020. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY

Newberry (7-13, 7-10 SAC) seems to have found their rhythm late in the season as they head into Saturday's contest winning five of their last nine games. The Wolves are top five in the South Atlantic Conference in offensive rebounding (2nd, 14.0 per game), total rebounds (4th, 41.0 pg), and blocks (4th, 3.8 pg). 

The Scarlet & Gray are averaging 60.3 points per game (10th in SAC) this season while allowing opponents 66.3 ppg (7th in SAC). 

Giulia Bongiorno is averaging double-figures in scoring with 10.2 ppg, and leads the team in assists averaging 2.3 pg. Bongiorno is also fifth in the SAC for three-point percentage per game shooting 43.9 percent from behind the arc. 

Ericka Wiseley enters Saturday's game on a four-game double digit scoring streak (13, 11, 10, 14) bringing her season average to 7.7 ppg. 

TUSCULUM

Tusculum (7-13, 5-11 SAC) is averaging 59.6 ppg (11th in SAC) this season while allowing their opponents 61.6 ppg (4th in SAC). Three Pioneers are averaging double-figures in scoring this year, led by Jalia Arnwine (13.3 ppg) and Mya Belton (12.6 ppg). 

LAST TIMEOUT

The Newberry Women's basketball team finds themselves ranked sixth in the South Atlantic Conference standings after an upset victory (74-64) over 16th ranked Wingate, Wednesday night (Feb. 2), inside Eleazer Arena. 

Holly Davies exploded for 20 points on 42-percent shooting from the field, and 75-percent from downtown in the win. Bongiorno and Wiseley accompanied her in the double-digit scoring surge with Bongiorno dropping 18 points (10 in the 3rd Quarter), and Wiseley adding on 14 more to round out the double-figure scorers. 

UPCOMING SCHEDULE 

Newberry Women's basketball hits the road for another conference matchup as they take on cross-state rival Anderson University on Wednesday (Feb. 9). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside Abney Athletic Center.
