Wolves Look To Bounce Back At Home Versus Wingate on Wednesday

Women’s basketball attempts to go 4-0 at home in 2022

Newberry, S.C. (February 1, 2022) - The Newberry Women's basketball team returns home this Wednesday (Feb. 2) for the start of a two-game homestand as they welcome the Wingate Bulldogs. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Eleazer Arena.

MATCHUP HISTORY

This Wednesday's contest will be the 62nd meeting all-time between Newberry and Wingate Women's basketball, in a matchup that dates back to 1986. Newberry is behind in the series, 16-46, with their last meeting taking place earlier this season (Nov. 23). The Wolves look to avoid the season sweep by the Bulldogs as Wingate won their first contest this season, 79-52, inside Cuddy Arena. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY


Newberry (6-13, 6-10 SAC) heads into Wednesday's matchup averaging 59.5 points per game (10th in SAC), and allowing opponents an average of 66.4 points (7th in SAC). The Wolves are second in offensive rebounding for the South Atlantic Conference with 14.4 offensive rebounds per game. They also rank fourth in blocks averaging 3.7 per game. 

Seven Wolves are averaging six or more points a game with Giulia Bongiorno leading the team in scoring and assists (9.8 ppg, 2.4 assists). 

Courtney Virgo is averaging 14.2 ppg in her last four contests, and 7.3 ppg on the season.

WINGATE

Wingate (18-1, 16-0) goes into Wednesday's game on an 18-game win streak after losing their opener. The Bulldogs have three players averaging double-digits in scoring. Bryanna Troutman leads the scoring charge with 18.6 ppg through 19 games. Haleigh Brandon tops the Bulldogs in rebounding grabbing 8.6 a game, while averaging 10.3 ppg on the season. 

LAST ACTION

After a successful three-game win streak, Newberry saw their streak end this past Saturday (Jan. 29), 78-57, on the road at Carson-Newman. The Wolves got out to an early 11-point advantage in the first quarter, but soon saw that lead deteriorate. The Eagles held the Wolves scoreless in the second quarter. 

Despite the loss, three Wolves scored in double-figures led by Payton Cronen with 11 points and three rebounds. Bongiorno recorded her tenth double-digit scoring game (10 points, 2 assists) of the season. 

Ericka Wiseley also posted a strong performance with 10 points and grabbing four rebounds.
