TOCCOA, Ga. – Kicking off their final fall tournament of the season before hibernating till the spring championship season, the Newberry College men's golf team currently sits in ninth overall after one round of action at the McCoy-Wright Currahee Invite hosted by Erskine and Anderson at the Currahee Golf Course.
The Wolves were able to start the tournament with a 16-over opening round to sit in ninth place. The hosts Anderson currently sits in the lead at four-under while the Wolves remain just five strokes out of the top-four teams.
The Wolves were led in the first round by sophomore Carlos Camaros-Ruiz (Madrid, Spain) who was able to card an even-par round of 72 to open up the tournament. Just one shot behind him was freshman Javier Borrego Martin (Salamanca, Spain) who shot a one-over first round score. The two sit in ties for sixth and sixteenth, respectively.
Senior Alex Pillar (Hawley, Pa.) turned in a four-over 76 in the opening round of action to sit in a tie for 36th while freshman Herman du Plessis (Johannesburg, Z.A.) rounded out the scoring for the Wolves on the day as he notched a 11-over 83 on the day to sit in a tie for 72nd.
Second round action in the tournament was halted early due to darkness, but the team will pick up right where they left off in the morning as the complete the second round of action and start their third round at 8:30 a.m.
