Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Newberry College Wolves (9-9, 9-7 SAC) fell to the Eagles of Carson-Newman (14-7, 11-6 SAC) in a defensive struggle by a score of 55-47 on Saturday.
Both teams started the game out by going back-and-forth as Marcus Ford tied the score at 9-9. The defenses would then show signs of what was to come as both teams were held scoreless for three minutes of action before Sherman Robinson ended the drought. Newberry would pull ahead, but the Eagles would answer with a 6-0 run to cut the lead back down to one point. Despite the strong defense, Robinson and TJ Brown were there to help the Wolves to a little bit of breathing room before halftime, sending the game into the break with Newberry leading 27-23.
Newberry would start off the second half with a 7-2 run that was capped up with a shot down low from QuanDaveon McCollum that put the wolves up by nine. However, the Eagles would lock in on defense as they would go on an 18-3 run over the course of seven minutes of action. Brown and Robinson utilized clutch baskets and free throws to keep the Wolves within striking distance, but it ultimately would not be enough.
Despite the loss, Brown led the team in scoring with 19 points while Robinson contributed 13 off the bench. Ford would also go on to have an impressive night on the glass as the 5-foot-10-inch guard hauled in 10 rebounds.
The Wolves return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 2 when they host Wingate in Eleazer Arena with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
