Wolves Eying Four Straight Wins As They Take On Carson-Newman Saturday

Wolves take on Eagles in Conference Play

Newberry, S.C. (January 28, 2022) - After a successful two-game homestand, the Newberry Women's basketball team hits the road to face the Carson-Newman Eagles in an attempt to win four straight games for the first time this season. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. inside Holt Fieldhouse.

MATCHUP HISTORY

Saturday's contest will be the 56th meeting between the Wolves and Eagles in a matchup that dates back to 1996. Newberry is 20-36 all-time versus Carson-Newman with the Eagles edging the Wolves in their last competition earlier this season (Dec. 11), 77-73, inside Eleazer Arena. Carson-Newman enters Saturday's game boasting an 11-game win streak against Newberry dating back to 2016. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY

Newberry (6-12, 6-9 SAC) enters Saturday's game on a three-game win streak and having gone undefeated (3-0) at home in the month of January. The Wolves are averaging 59.7 points per game (10th in SAC) while allowing opponents 62.5 points per game (9th in SAC) on the year. Newberry is also grabbing an average of 14.4 offensive rebounds a game which ranks second in South Atlantic Conference play.

Courtney Virgo looks to extend her double-figure scoring streak to four games after coming off a double-double performance against Coker this past Monday (Jan. 24). Virgo is averaging 17 points per game in her last three games bringing her average to 7.3 points per game for the season. 

Giulia Bongiorno leads Newberry in scoring and assists through the first 18 games averaging 9.8 points per game and 2.4 assists. 

Tyla Stolberg has also emerged as a dominant scoring threat for the Wolves averaging 8.5 points per game, and scoring in double-digits in two of her last four contests. 

CARSON-NEWMAN

Carson-Newman (16-4, 13-3 SAC) heads into Saturday's matchup with three players averaging double-figures in scoring. Braeden Wykle tops the Eagles in scoring and assists with 18.9 points per game and three helpers a game on the season. Lindsey Taylor leads CNU in rebounding this season grabbing 7.3 boards as well as being the Eagles' second leading scorer with 14.6 points per game.

LAST ACTION

Newberry extended their win streak to three games this past Monday night (Jan. 24) as they trounced Coker, 64-40, in the Wolves best defensive game of the season thus far. Newberry controlled momentum from the opening tip as they held Coker to just three first quarter points on 6-percent shooting from the field (1-15). 

Tyla Stolberg led the Wolves in scoring with 15 points on 83-percent (5-6) shooting from the field in just eight minutes played. Courtney Virgo posted a double-double performance in the win dropping 12 points and snagging a game-high 10 rebounds on the way to victory. 

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The Newberry Women's Basketball team returns home on Wednesday (Feb. 2) to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate, inside Eleazer Arena. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
