Newberry, S.C. (January 21, 2022) - The Newberry Women's basketball team returns home on Saturday (Jan. 22) to face off against conference contender UVA Wise, inside Eleazer Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Saturday's game will be the 3rd annual "Red Game" in commemoration of Ellen Petty, a former women's basketball player who played for Newberry head coach Joanna Tincher during her tenure at Converse. In 2017, Petty tragically passed away from an accidental overdose at the age of 23. Her family has since started The Ellen 23 Foundation to raise awareness for substance abuse victims and the families affected by it.

Fans are asked to wear red to raise awareness and show support for those struggling with substance abuse. Donations of toiletries, blankets, journals, and other items will be collected throughout the game to be put into care bags and given to substance abuse rehab patients. Your donations and support will be greatly appreciated.

MATCHUP HISTORY

Saturday's matchup will be the fourth meeting all-time between Newberry and UVA Wise Women's basketball. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series 3-1 over Newberry dating back to 2019. Their last meeting took place earlier this season on December 1, 2021 with UVA Wise emerging victorious, 67-54, inside the Prior Center. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY

Newberry (4-12, 4-9 SAC) is coming off of a convincing road win at Limestone this past Wednesday (Jan. 19), inside the Timken Center. 

One Wolf is averaging double figures in scoring and seven Wolves average five or more points a game heading into Saturday's faceoff. 

Junior Giulia Bongiorno leads all Wolves in scoring and assists, averaging 10 points per game and 2.1 assists. 

Senior Talia Roberts has also asserted her dominance in scoring this season, despite battling through injury. The Columbia, S.C. native is averaging nine points per game in just eight games and also scored double-figures in four out of the eight she has played.

Redshirt Junior Tyla Stolberg is also a key scorer for the Wolves, averaging 8.1 points per game and 4.4 rebounds on the season.

Redshirt Junior Mylaysia Gates looks to continue her success on the boards as she tops the wolves in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game and 6.2 points in 15 games played. 

UVA WISE

UVA Wise (5-12, 5-9 SAC) looks to bounce back after an eight point home loss to conference foe Lincoln Memorial, this past Wednesday, inside the Prior Center. 

Two Cavaliers are averaging double-digit scoring this season led by Nia Vanzant with 15.6 points per game and 1.5 assists. Kalee Johnson has been impressive as well, averaging 12.4 points and 6.9 rebounds in 16 games played.

LAST ACTION 

NEWBERRY

The Wolves are two days removed from their first road victory of 2022 over cross-state rival Limestone in conference play. Newberry put on a stellar shooting performance in Wednesday's win (Jan. 19), shooting a season-high 47-percent from downtown and 49-percent from the field. 

Three Wolves scored in double figures in the win, led by Giulia Bongiorno with 21 points and shooting 100-percent (2-2) from beyond-the-arc. Courtney Virgo also had an impressive scoring effort, shooting 60-percent from the field and 50-percent from downtown to combine for 20 points on the night. Team rebounding leader Mylaysia Gates scored 11 points and snagged seven rebounds in the win. 

UVA WISE

The UVA Wise Cavaliers look for a bounce back win versus Newberry after losing to conference rival Lincoln Memorial, 67-59, on Wednesday night (Jan. 19) inside the Prior Center. Kalee Johnson led the Cavs in scoring with 16 points and a game-high six rebounds. Her teammate Nia Vanzant also contributed 12 points and four rebounds in Wednesday's loss.
