Webb Reaches 1,000 Assists as Wolves Fall in Five-Set Thriller

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves (6-4 (1-2 SAC)) fell in five sets to the Trojans of Anderson University (S.C.) (7-4 (2-1 SAC)). During the first set of the match, Newberry setter, Avery Webb, recorded her one thousandth career assist, the tenth in school history to do so.

The first set would start out close with both teams going back-and-forth. However, Anderson would use a 6-1 run to build some separation, taking a 12-8 advantage. After kills from Elizabeth Ober and Taylor Hall brought the Wolves back into it, the Trojans pushed their lead back out to 22-16. The Wolves would rally with a 3-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Natasha Bannister, but it would not be enough as the Trojans claimed the first set 25-19.

The second set would once again start out neck-and-neck as the score would be tied on eleven different occasions. The Wolves would then use a 5-1 run to build some separation of their own with multiple Bannister kills and a Zoe Dinkins service ace. The Trojans would continue to fight, but they would have no answer for Bannister's attack down the stretch en route to the Wolves taking the second set 25-20.

The Trojans would take the lead early in the third set, but they would not give it up. The Wolves battled behind multiple kills from Hall, but the Trojans would answer with runs of 5-1 and 4-0 to take the set 25-10.

The fourth set appeared at first to be firmly in the hands of Anderson as the Trojans built as large as a 6-point lead, but the Wolves would not go away that easily. Newberry would go on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 16-16 that was capped off with a service ace from Hall. After both teams traded points, the Trojans would take a 22-20 advantage, but the Wolves answered with a 5-1 run to take the set 25-20, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set would be a battle, but Newberry would claim an early lead with a 4-0 run. The Trojans would manage to keep themselves within striking distance, and they would eventually go on a 5-1 run to claim a 13-12 lead. The Wolves answered with a kill from Hall and a Katie Ullsperger service ace, giving Newberry a match point opportunity. However, Anderson would rally with a 3-0 run, ending the set 16-14 and breaking the Wolves' hearts.

Webb would need only 3 assists coming into the match to reach 1,000, but the junior setter would finish the match with 44 while also having 9 digs. Bannister led the attack with 23 kills, and Hall would secure a strong double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs. On the defensive end, Amanda Berecz would notch 22 digs while providing 9 assists of her own, and Dinkins had an impressive 8 blocks in the contest, 5 of which were solo.

The Wolves return to action on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. to host South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill at Eleazer Arena.
