Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves Volleyball Program (5-2) took down the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 3-0 in their home opener at Eleazer Arena on Tuesday.
The first set would start out neck-and-neck with both teams struggling to take control. However, that would change after a kill by Natasha Bannister kickstarted a 6-1 run to give the Wolves some separation. Erskine would fight back, but a pair of Bannister kills would lead Newberry to a set-clinching 4-0 run that would hand the Wolves the first set 25-16.
The second set would be the Wolves' most dominant of the evening. After going down 4-2, Newberry put their foot on the gas for an outstanding 12-0 run to take a 14-4 advantage. However, they did not let up after the run as they only allowed four additional Erskine points throughout the remainder of the set, taking it by a score of 25-8.
Newberry would start the third set by utilizing kills from Bannister and Elizabeth Ober as well as an Olivia Bradley service ace to jump out to a 4-1 lead. After the Flying Fleet battled back, an Avery Webb service ace would cap off a 5-1 run for the Wolves to push their lead back out to 14-8. Newberry would follow that up with an additional 6-1 run to extend their lead to 20-11 before a Bannister kill would ultimately end the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
Bannister would lead the way offensively with a strong 16 kills while Webb set up her teammates nicely with 29 assists. Meanwhile on the defensive end, Amanda Berecz would post 20 digs while Zoe Dinkins would come away with 3 solo blocks.
The Wolves hit the road on Friday, Sept. 17 to put their four-match winning-streak on the line, opening up South Atlantic Conference play against the Tusculum Pioneers.
