Wolves Take Two Extra-Inning Wins Over the Bears

HICKORY, N.C. - Newberry picked up two extra-inning victories over Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday to open the conference series. The Wolves won game one 6-3 in 11 innings and game two 6-5 in 10 innings.

GAME ONE

The Wolves drew first blood in the top of the first when Luke Orr ripped a one-out double and then scored on a single by Jack Harris. Lenoir-Rhyne answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Nick Butler led off the second with a single to left-center field and then stole second to get into scoring position. He scored on a single to center field by Ian Clements to tie the game at two. The Wolves would regain the lead in the top of the third when Zachary Bailes reached on an error to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Bears would tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth. After that, neither team would be able to get a run across until the top of the eleventh. Colin Allman drew a one-out walk, and Zane Tarrance then got hit by a pitch. A single by Clements loaded the bases for Newberry. Kenny Bergmann broke the tie in a two-out walk, and Orr drove a single up the middle to score two and make it a 6-3 game.

Clements finished the game 2-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Orr was 2-6 with a double and two runs driven in to lead the Wolves. Bryce Peterson (4-0) picked up the win allowing just one hit and striking out three in one and two-thirds innings of work.

 Game Two

It was the Bear's turn to take the first lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the second. A leadoff double by Kenny Bergmann and then an RBI single by Dalton Lansdowne tied the game up at one in the third.

Bergman gave the Wolves the lead with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but it would be short-lived as Lenoir-Rhyne tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Bergmann led off with a single, and then Jacob LeBron pinch ran for him. Zane Tarrance reached on a bunt single, and Lansdowne reached on an error when he laid down a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Zachary Bailes lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score LeBron and give Newberry the lead. Luke Orr then doubled to left-center, scoring two more runs and made it a 5-2 game. The Bears would get a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it into extra innings again.

The Wolves finally broke the tie in the top of the 10th. Nick Butler reached on an infield single and then advanced to third on two straight passed balls. A sacrifice bunt by Ian Clements scored Butler and gave Newberry the lead. The Wolves held off a rally by Lenoir-Rhyne in the bottom half of the inning and took the win.

Bergmann led the Wolves at the plate, going 3-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and one RBI. Devin Makovsky (2-1) picked up the win allowing three hits and striking out two in three innings of relief.
