Newberry Falls to Anderson 4-2

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Newberry men's soccer team was unable to pick up a home win Thursday night, falling to the Anderson Trojans 4-2 in the season finale. Newberry ends the spring 2021 season with a 1-6-1 record, with an 0-5 record in SAC play.

The Wolves were the ones who drew first blood, as Tommaso Davico scored his first of the season to give Newberry the early lead. After both teams got a couple shots, the Trojans were the beneficiaries of a foul that was whistled inside the penalty box, resulting in a penalty kick that Martin Carpena put in the back of the net to even the score. Noah Vezzu got a shot in the 40th minute for the Wolves that was blocked before it could reach the net in what would end up being the final shot of the half.

Anderson kicked things off in the second half, scoring goals in the 54th and 61st minutes to quickly go up 3-1. In the 78th minute they took another shot that Newberry goalkeeper Jacob Williams made a diving save on, though the Trojans benefited from a own goal from the Wolves in the 80th minute to go up 4-1. Newberry got one of the goals back in the 90th minute when Vezzu fed Levi Heholt, who beat the Anderson goalkeeper to make it 4-2, but time would run out on the Wolves.

Williams finished the game with five saves for Newberry, who on the other end managed six shots, three of which were on goal. The Wolves took six corner kicks in the match, with five coming in the second half. Davicho and Heholt both finished the game with one goal and a shot on goal each, while Tre Bonaparte took two shots, with one shot on goal. Vezzu had the lone assist on the night for Newberry.
