Newberry Suffers First Loss of Season, 1-0 in Overtime

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Newberry women's soccer team battled into overtime Thursday evening, but in the end they suffered their first loss of the season to Anderson, falling 1-0 in overtime.

The lone goal of the game came just 1:09 into extra time when Emma Deadwyler converted a free kick for Anderson, giving them their first win of the season.

Jaidyn Jacobs led the Wolves, recrding four shots, two of which were on goal. Jacqueline Aldrete had three shots, with two shots on goal while Ashlee Rotert had a pair of shots on goal. Delaney Hood played all 91 minutes in net for the Wolves, recording five saves. She withstood a charge from the Trojans in the closing minutes of regulation, when Anderson got a pair of shots in the final five minutes, both of which sailed wide of the net.

The Wolves nearly broke through in the second half, when Jacobs took a clean shot and hit the crossbar. The Wolves would be the beneficiaries of a corner kick three minutes later, but were unable to convert.

Early in the first half the teams were trading shots on goal. The Trojans started the flurry of action with a shot that Hood made a save on. Newberry then took a shot three minutes later, but the Anderson goalie was able to make a save on Rotert. After the teams traded another round of shots on goal, Aldrete finished the flurry by taking a shot that hit the left post. Newberry then got a couple of shots off a corner kick, but one sailed wide and one was saved.

The teams were fairly even on the stats sheet, with both teams recording 11 shots, six of which were on goal. The Trojans had 8 corner kicks, compared to four corner kicks for Newberry.
