Wolves Come Back To Beat Converse In Double Overtime, 2-1 In Conference Tourney Quarterfinal

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The  Newberry field hockey team beat Converse in double overtime by a final score of 2-1 on a goal by freshman forward Lily Drury in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Tournament at Setzler Field. Newberry moves to 5-2 overall.

The game was scoreless until the visitors scored to go up 1-0 with 13:31 left in the fourth quarter. Then Newberry started to rally. In a rare opportunity, the Wolves drew their first penalty stroke of the season following a shot by freshman defender Sanne Pronk with 9:00 left. Freshman defender Hailey Moore took the stroke but it was saved by the Converse goalie.

With around two minutes left, it appeared the visitors would walk out of Newberry with an upset win but sophomore forward Rachel Crowder refused to let that happen. Following a shot by junior midfielder Kelli Marshall that was saved, Crowder was able to score off the rebound to tie the score with 2:05 on the clock. After a few more fouls by each team, the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime, freshman midfielder Caitlin Wassermann and senior forward Farai Kawonde each had a shot on goal but both were saved and the game went to a second overtime. After three more Newberry shots on goal, Drury took a pass from Moore and put in the back of the net to end the contest at the 2:53 mark of overtime.

Drury led Newberry with a goal and three shots on goal and Marshall had three shots on goal. Wassermann and Kawonde also chipped in with two shots on goal. Junior forward Michaella Pirozzi came off the bench and had a shot on goal.

Freshman forward Payton Findlay recorded a defensive save to lead the Newberry defensive effort and junior goalkeeper Grace Lee the entire game in the net, stopping eight shots and earned the win (5-2).
