Field Hockey Falls To Queens In Conference Tourney Semifinals To Conclude Season, 3-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Newberry field hockey team fell to the Queens Royals in the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Tournament by a final score of 3-2 to conclude their 2021 spring season. Newberry finishes with a 5-3 overall record.

The Wolves came out firing to start the game. Freshman forward Lily Drury, senior forward Farai Kawonde and freshman forward Bella Focht each had a shot on goal in the first three minutes but all were stopped by the Queens goalie. Junior goalkeeper Grace Lee saved a shot at the 7:09 mark but the Royals scored off a corner a few seconds later to go up 1-0.

Newberry got two more shots by sophomore forward Rachel Crowder and Kawonde before Drury scored to tie the game at 1 at the 13:34 mark. The game remained deadlocked until the Royals scored to make it 2-1 with five minutes left in the second quarter. Kawonde then had a shot saved at the 26:41 mark and junior midfielder Kelli Marshall had a shot go wide at the 26:55 mark off a corner by Drury. Freshman forward Payton Findlay closed out the half with a huge defensive save at the 29:01 mark to keep it a 2-1 game at intermission.

After the Royals scored to make it 3-1 early in the third quarter, Lee recorded four saves to keep Newberry in the game. But the Wolves began to battle back in the fourth. At the 53:16 mark, Marshall had a shot saved off a Drury corner and was immediately followed by freshman defender Hailey Moore's shot that was blocked. Freshman midfielder Caitlin Wassermann and Moore then had their attempts go wide before Drury got her second goal of the game off a pass from Kawonde to make it 3-2 at the 57:49 mark to end the scoring.
