HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- The Newberry Wrestling program completed their first-ever undefeated season Wednesday night, beating Coker 32-18, giving them a perfect 8-0 record this season, with a 7-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action.
The dual started at 125 pounds, where reigning South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week
Zach Shupp continued his first period domination, pinning his opponent in 1:16, giving the Wolves an early 6-0 lead. After Coker forfeited at 133 pounds and Newberry forfeited at 141 pounds, the Wolves picked up another win at 149 pounds when
Devan Moore picked up three takedowns en route to a 7-4 decision, giving the Wolves a 15-6 lead.
Newberry picked up more bonus points at 157 pounds when
Will Evans racked up a 20-5 tech fall, wrapping things up in 6:14. Coker won at 165 pounds before
Trevor Mansfield picked up a fall at 174 pounds, pushing the lead to 26-11. Coker would win the next two matches before Newberry's
Devon Rice won a fall at 285 pounds to wrap things up.
The Wolves will be back in action Saturday when they compete at the Super Region II Tournament in Franklin Springs, Ga. Those who qualify will then wrestle at the Division II National Tournament in mid-March.
Beyond the Results
- Shupp is now 7-1 on the season, with six of those wins being falls. Including tonight, he has five first-period falls, and four consecutive opening period falls.
- Evans finishes the regular season with a 7-1 record, with tonight being his first tech fall win of the season.Â
- Mansfield's pin was his first of the season, giving him a regular season record of 3-3.
