ANDERSON, S.C. – Newberry College junior
TJ Brown scored a career-high 27 points, but the Wolves lost to the Anderson Trojans 96-77 on Monday night.
Brown hit a pull-up baseline jumper to begin the evening for the Wolves, but their 2-0 lead did not last long. Over the next 5:09, the Trojans went on a 22-4 run, knocking down five three-pointers. The Wolves were able to bring themselves back within single digits at the 8:02 mark, 28-19, thanks to a hook shot and layup from junior forward QanDaveon McCollum on back-to-back possessions. Last week's conference Player of the Week finished with eight points on 3-6 (50.0%) shooting.
The Trojans did not allow Newberry to hang around long, closing the first half on a 18-4 run over the final 5:31. Anderson shot 11-16 (68.8%) from three in the first half compared to Newberry's 1-11 (9.1%) performance from deep. Senior guard
Marcus Ford made the lone three-pointer for the Wolves in the first half and added three free throws for six points by halftime. Brown led the way at the break with 14.
The two teams traded buckets to open the second 20:00 and Newberry went on a small 7-3 run in the first 1:34, trailing 53-35. The Wolves were down by double-digits the entire second half. They faced a 16-point deficit, 70-54, after sophomore guard
Andrew Robinson hit a three-pointer, but that was as close as the Wolves would come to the Trojans the rest of the way.
Junior guard
Trevon Hobson scored five points in the last 6:13 of the game, marking his career-high in a Wolves uniform. Freshman guard
Luke Seals, freshman guard
Malik Joseph, junior forward
Kyle Tierney, and sophomore guard
Booker Cusaac all recorded a bucket in the final 6:13 of the game. In the end, the Trojans were too much for the Wolves and won 96-77 after setting a school record with 22 three-pointers made.
