NEWBERRY, S.C. -- There was no shortage of offense for the Newberry Softball team Sunday afternoon, as they swept the Flagler Saints in a doubleheader, powered in part by a five-run sixth inning in game one and a masterful pitching performance in game two.
Game One: Wolves score nine unanswered
After falling behind early, the Wolves woke up their bats in the fifth, scoring four runs. It started when
Vanessa Wilson doubled.
Paige Meyer and
McKenzie Barneycastle both reached on back-to-back fielder's choices to load the bases for
Hannah Towery, who hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the fielder, allowing everyone to move up a base and making it a 2-1 Flagler lead.
Haley Simonds then drew a walk to force in the game-tying run.Â
The game wouldn't stay tied for long, as
Lauren Huffman was the next batter, and she ripped a single into left field, giving Newberry a 3-2 lead. They added another run when
Hailey Hill singled up the middle, making it a 4-2 Wolves advantage.
That was just a preview of what would happed in the sixth, when the Wolves struck for five runs on seven hits, including a three-run home run from Towery, along with RBI singles from Hill,
Reagan Glanz and
Tedi Nunn that put the lead out of reach for the Saints, who were able to get a one-out hit in the seventh, but weren't able to do any damage.Â
Game Two: Sullivan spins complete game two-hitter
The second game saw
Alexandrea Sullivan throw a masterful game, going all seven innings, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out nine batters. She had early run support, as Nunn hit a double into center field, driving in a pair of runs and giving Newberry the lead. They would strike again in the fourth, when they put four runs on the board, aided in part by a Simonds single that brought in a pair of runs. They also had an RBI single from Barneycastle and a RBI groundout from Hill to make it a 6-0 game.
