NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Newberry Softball team opened the South Atlantic Conference portion of their season with a pair of wins over Limestone, taking game one 6-0 and winning the nightcap 3-0. The wins move Newberry's record to 7-1 on the season, with a perfect 2-0 record in conference action.
Game One: Four-run third propels Wolves to win
In the first game of the day, it was scoreless heading into the third inning, where Newberry did the majority of their damage. It all started with
Tedi Nunn doubling down the left field line. After she advanced to third on a passed ball and the Saints recorded a strikeout,
Paige Meyer stepped up to the plate and ripped a single into left field, allowing Nunn to score. Meyer would advance to second off the throw to the plate.
McKenzie Barneycastle then hit a ground ball to the pitcher, who was unable to make a play, giving the Wolves runners on the corners. Newberry didn't waste the chance, as
Hannah Towery hit a long home run into left-center field, making it a 4-0 lead.Â
Newberry tacked on a run in the fourth when Meyer grounded out, with
Reagan Glanz scoring on the play. They scratched across one final run in the fifth when
Haley Simonds hit a home run, sending the ball over the left field fence. It was all more than enough for Newberry starting pitcher
Alyssa Ball, who threw a complete game shutout and didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning. She ended up scattering two hits and recording three strikeouts to pick up her first win of the season.
Game Two: Sullivan spins another gem as Wolves complete sweep
The second game saw
Alexandrea Sullivan enter the circle, and the reigning SAC Pitcher of the Week turned in another stellar outing, going the full seven innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out 12 batters. Her offense again provided her with runs, starting in the fourth inning when Simonds hit her second home run of the day, this one going over the left field fence to score Towery and put the Wolves up 2-0. She would strike again in the bottom of the fifth when she singled into center field, allowing Meyer to score the third run of the day. The Saints were able to escape the inning, but couldn't figure out Sullivan as she picked up her fourth win of the season.
