Wrestling Begins New Era Against Belmont Abbey

Head Coach Deral Brown's First Dual as Newberry Head Coach

Newberry, S.C. - The Newberry Wrestling Team begins their 2021-22 season, and first season under new head coach Deral Brown, on Wednesday evening against South Atlantic Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in Eleazer Arena.

Storylines:

Newberry is coming off of the first perfect season in program history, going a perfect 8-0 en route to their sixth straight conference title and eighth NCAA Super Region I title in program history.
The Scarlet and Gray were ranked 22nd in the NWCA Preseason Poll and were picked to finish first in the SACC Preseason Poll
The Wolves return four of their six national qualifiers to start the season in Zach Shupp, Will Evans, Caleb Spears, and ZeBrandon Gant.
Each of those four returning qualifiers were ranked individually in their respective weight classes.
Evans, Spears, and Gant were also named SACC Wrestlers to Watch.
Newberry Wrestlers compiled a 93-54 record in the 2020-21 season with 37 of those wins coming via pin.
Newberry Wrestlers had a 53-26 record in duals and were 49-21 in SACC duals.
The Wolves beat the Crusaders in the 2020-21 season 27-15 in Belmont, N.C. It was a match that saw the Wolves win the first five bouts and seven out of ten overall.
After this dual, the Scarlet and Gray will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to participate in the NC State Open on Sunday before continuing SACC competition on November 20th at King.
