Wolves Prepare for Conference Semifinal Showdown Against Top-Seeded Converse

Newberry Looks for First Title Game Appearance

Newberry, S.C. - After winning their second ever conference tournament game on Tuesday evening, the Newberry Field Hockey Team now faces the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Regular Season Champions, the Converse Valkyries, in the SACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday evening at Hayden Abney Fulp Field in Spartanburg, S.C. The game is scheduled to start at 5 PM. 

Storylines:
  • This is the second consecutive trip to the conference semifinals for the Wolves and also second within this calendar year. 
  • The Wolves defeated Converse 2-1 in overtime in the spring 2021 conference quarterfinals, the first conference tournament win in program history.
  • Newberry is looking for their first ever conference championship appearance.
  • The two teams split the meetings during the regular season, both winning at home. 
  • After Newberry beat the Valkyries on October 2nd, Converse fired off seven straight wins, including a win over #10 Limestone, to propel them to the regular season crown.
  • Converse concluded their season with a loss to Mount Olive, who Newberry eliminated on Tuesday.
  • Converse swept all of the SACC postseason awards with Mira Polzer winning Offensive Player of the Year, Ciriaca Petitto winning Defensive Player of the Year, Lotte Kanters winning Freshman of the Year, and Valerie Clark winning Coach of the Year.
  • Newberry had four players named to the All-SACC team in Yasmin De Meyer, Lily Drury, Erin Robbins, and Grace Lee.
  • Yasmin De Meyer has scored a goal or recorded an assist in each of the last eight games and 11 of 15 games this season. 
  • Rachel Crowder has also scored in three of the last five games. 
  • The winner of this game advances to the SACC Championship Game on Sunday at 2 PM in Spartanburg. They will face the winner of two-seed Limestone and three-seed Belmont Abbey.
