Wise, VA - 16th ranked Newberry College held off a late rally by UVa-Wise to take an 8-6 victory in the final game of the conference series and record their second straight series sweep Monday afternoon.
Aidan Baur would lead off the second inning with a double and
Tanner Lane would draw a walk to put two runners on in a scoreless game. Â Collin Allman would then double to left-center to score both runners and give the Wolves the 2-0 lead. Â The Cavaliers would score a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 2-1. Â
The Wolves would respond in the top of the third. Â Kenney Bergman would single with one out and score later in the inning on a home run by Baur to make it a 4-1 game. Â
Newberry would add to their lead with three runs in the fifth to increase their lead to six. Â
Beau Thompson would single to lead off the inning. Â With two outs,
Nick Butler would draw a walk and then steal second to put runners at second and third. Â Baur would then single to left field to score both runners. Â
Wise would score two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to cut the Newberry lead to just one run. Â An RBI single by
Luke Orr in the eighth would give the Wolves some breathing room, and they would hold the Cavaliers scoreless for the next two innings to take the victory and the series sweep.
Baur led the Wolves offense going 3-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored, and four RBIs. Â Allman was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Orr was also 2-4 with a double and one run driven in. Starter
Ryan Harbin (3-0) picked up the win allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out seven in six innings of work. Â
Josh Stempihar picked up his second save of the year, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning of relief. Â
