FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. - The Newberry Wolves women's lacrosse team bounced back in a big way Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Emmanuel 22-9 in a non-conference matchup. With the win, the Wolves improve to 4-5, outpacing last season's win total.
A dominant second half led to the thirteen goal victory. Leading 10-8 at the half,
Sophie Moore got Newberry started by netting a free position shot just over two minutes into the half. Emmanuel scored to cut the lead to two, but the Wolves were dominant from there on.
Chloe Wood scored to extend the lead to three, and
Robin Hall added another goal to give Newberry a four goal lead with 22 minutes to play.
Wood scored again to up the lead to five before
Taylor Doiron and
Marissa Plumer scored just over a minute apart to blow the game open and give the Wolves a 16-9 lead. Newberry continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal as Moore scored twice to increase the lead to 18-9. Plumer then tacked on a free position goal to give the Wolves a double digit lead. A
Kylee Kanealey goal got Newberry to 20 goals for the first time this season, and another goal by Hall increased the lead to 12.
Madalyn Messersmith scored with less than a minute to play to close out the scoring.
The first half saw a back and forth battle as Plumer scored early to give Newberry the 1-0 lead. Moore and Plumer scored to up the advantage to three, but the Lions scored a free position goal to cut the lead to two. A
Julia Hardiman goal gave the Wolves a 4-1 advantage, but Justine Dorelas scored for Emmanuel to keep the lead at three. Plumer scored her third goal of the game, but Hanna Hernandez responded for the Lions to make it a two goal game.
Dorelas then scored again to draw within one goal, but Moore scored to keep the lead at two. Dorelas and Hernandez then scored consecutive goals to tie the score at six with less than ten minutes to play in the half. Wood and Dorelas then traded goals before
Kelly Martyn, Wood, and Plumer scored consecutively to push the lead back to three. Hernandez then scored once again to provide the halftime margin.
Newberry outshot Emmanuel 37-24 overall and put 30 shots on goal to the Lions' 15. The Wolves also recorded 13 ground balls to Emmanuel's nine and were 100 percent on their clear attempts with a sterling 22-22 mark.Â
Plumer led the way for the Wolves with a season and career high of six goals and five assists. Moore added five goals, going over 100 career goals in the process. Wood scored four goals and Hall had two to round out the top scorers for Newberry.
The Wolves will have a week off before returning to conference action against Queens on March 18.
