NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team picked up a pair of wins this afternoon against North Greenville.
Game One (Newberry wins 11-0)
The Wolves took advantage of an early mistake by the Crusaders in the second inning. Sophomore
Reagan Glanz worked the count and fought back to earn herself a walk. On ball four, the catcher threw to second thinking the runner at first was stealing second and the ball went into the outfield. Senior
Haley Simonds, who was standing on third, then trotted home to score the first run.
Newberry scored majority of their runs in the bottom half of the third. It started off with junior
Hannah Davis getting walked, with bases loaded, to force in junior
Paige Meyer to put the Wolves up 2-0. Sophomore
Julia Bomhardt came up to the plate next and singled to left center to score another run for Newberry. After Glanz walked to plate one more run, freshman
Mallena Wright stepped up to the plate. The Summerville, S.C. native delivered by smacking her first career grand slam to straight away center field to make it 8-0 in favor of Newberry.
Wright would not be the only Newberry player to hit a homerun, as Simonds connected with a two run shot of her own, in the very next inning. The Wolves scored their final run of the game after a dropped fly ball by the Crusaders. The drop allowed junior
Sydney Patterson to cross home after standing on third.
Senior
Selice Daley pitched her fifth complete game for Newberry this season. This time in the circle she threw a no-hitter and shutout North Greenville, while striking out six batters.
Game Two (Newberry wins 2-0)
The second game was a pitchers duel by both sides, with Callie Richard of North Greenville and junior
Alyssa Ball of Newberry getting the nod. Both pitchers scattered five hits and struck out three batters with giving up one walk, as each went the distance for their respective teams. Though it was the Wolves that got to Richards, as she gave up two runs, and Ball received the shutout victory.
It was not until the third inning when Newberry got the board first. With junior
McKenzie Barneycastle standing on second, Simonds connected with the pitch to send it right back up the middle to get Barneycastle to come around.
The Wolves held onto that one run lead all the way to the sixth inning. After freshman
Tedi Nunn walked, sophomore
Victoria Eaton came up to the plate. She picked up two quick strikes before finding her pitch and send it over the right fielder's head, all the way to the fence. Nunn ran all the way from first to home on the RBI double by Eaton to put Newberry up 2-0.
