Newberry comes from behind in game two to salvage a split with Georgia College

Head coach Ciria Triplett earns her 200th career win

NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team split their double header, for the first home loss, this afternoon with Georgia College.

Game One (Newberry lose 12-3 {5 inns.})
The first game against the Bobcats was one for the Wolves to forget, specially in the first inning. After back-to-back walks to start the game, Brooke Lougher of Georgia College smacked a hit through the right side to bring in one run. Two batters later Haley Howell went up to the plate for the Bobcats and was able to connect with a pitch, that was sent over the left field fence, to drive in three more runs.

The Wolves managed to get the second out of the inning, but the Bobcats scored another run in the process. Georgia College scored their final two runs of the inning off a single to the outfield by Amber Coy. Eventually the inning ended on a strikeout but the damage was done as the Bobcats scored seven runs in the top of the first.

Newberry scored their first run of the game off a hit by sophomore Julia Bomhardt. The Dagsboro native out ran the throw by the shortstop for an infield single, which allowed fellow classmate Regan Glanz to reach home.

In the fourth, Georgia College added on to their big lead. Started off with Lougher drawing a walk to force a run in to make it 8-1. A single by Samantha Vinson brought in their ninth run of the game. Howell stepped up to the plate after that and smacked a double to left field to drive in two more runs. Darby Pinkard drove in the final run of the inning with her hit, to increase the lead to 12-1.

The Wolves were able to score two more runs in the game before the conclusion. In the fourth junior Hannah Davis singled through the left side to plate one run. Finally a double to left center by freshman Mallena Wright brought in the final Newberry run to make the 12-3 score.

Game Two (Newberry wins 5-4)
Just like game one, Georgia College got to Newberry first as they scored two runs to start the game. Howell connected with a pitch to send it to center field to allow both of the runs to come around.

In the third inning, the Bobcats added on to their score to make it 4-0. Vinson would round the bases this time, along with one other runner, after she blasted a homerun over left center. Georgia College scored all four of their runs in the second game with two outs in both the first and third innings.

After the Bobcats plated four unanswered runs, the Wolves struck back in a big way. In the bottom half of the fourth, Newberry cut the lead in half after a two run shot by senior Haley Simonds.

Newberry got a little bit of help in the fifth inning during junior McKenzie Barneycastle's at bat. She put the ball in play, where the shortstop threw the ball away trying to throw out Barneycastle. That error throw allowed junior Morgan Wagaman to score on the play to make it 4-3, in favor of Georgia College.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Newberry had runners on first and third with two outs when junior Paige Meyer came to the plate. The Georgetown, Ind. native came up big for the Wolves by hitting a ball back up the middle to score the tying run. After that Wright was up next to bat for Newberry. The moment was not to big for the freshman as she connected on a pitch to send it through the middle of the infield, to give the Wolves their first lead of the game.

Senior Selice Daley was called upon in the top of the seventh to try to preserve the one run lead. The Bluffton, SC native did a fine job, after hitting the first batter, as she retired the next three Bobcat batters. This was Daley's first save of the season with Ball getting the win.
