Newberry, SC - Wingate defeated #13 Newberry 5-1 in the teams South Atlantic Conference series opener Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first three innings, the Bulldogs would take a 2-0 lead after an inside the park home run by Andrew McKay.
The Wolves would make it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh.
Aidan Baur would lead off with a single to right field and then advance to third on back to back sacrifice bunts my
Ian Clements and
Dalton Lansdowne. After Collin Allman drew a walk,
Zane Tarrance would single through the left side to score Baur.
The Bulldogs would respond with three runs in the eighth to pull away from the Wolves and take the win.
Nick Butler and Tarrance each had a double for Newberry, while Tarrance would drive in the lone run for the Wolves.
Tomas Sorcia, Jr. (2-1) took the loss allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out ten in six and two-thirds innings of work.
The two teams will conclude their series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 tomorrow.
