NEWBERRY – The Newberry baseball team won both games of the doubleheader against Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon.
Game One (Newberry wins 5-2):
It did not take the Wolves long to get a runner in scoring position to start the season. After senior
Colin Allman led the game off with a hit, he stole second base and then was bunted over to third by sophomore
Zane Tarrance. Allman came around to score off a triple by red-shirt sophomore
Nick Butler. Before the end of the inning Butler also scored on a wild pitch, giving Newberry a 2-0 lead.
During the fifth inning Newberry tack on another run with Tarrance rounding the bases. The Odessa, Fla. native got on base because of a fielding error by the center fielder, which allowed him to advance all the way to third. On the next pitch Tarrance scored on a wild pitch to put the Wolves up 3-0.
The Wolves got two more runs in the seventh when junior
Dalton Lansdowne scored off an Allman double, and Allman scoring off a Tarrance single and error by the third baseman.
In the bottom part of the same inning, Belmont Abbey finally got on the scoreboard with two runs.
Senior Tomas Sorcia Jr. had a great first start to the season. The Saluda, S.C. native pitched six innings, giving up only one hit and recording 11 strikeouts. Senior
Quinton Driggers came in for the last three inning to get the save, giving up one earned run on one hit and three strikeouts.
Game Two (Newberry Wins 3-1)
Once again Newberry got on the board first in the second. Sophomore
Aidan Baur singled to get on base, and than got to third off a hit by junior
Beau Thompson. Even though senior
Kenny Bergmann flied into a double play, he still allowed Baur to score on the play.
The Crusaders tied the game up in the botton of the third. JuJuan Carson doubled and then came around to score off a single to the outfield by Sean Johnson.
The Wolves took the lead again in the fifth when red-shirt junior
Luke Orr scored off a throwing error by Belmont Abbey's first baseman. Newberry was able to get one more run Allman came around off a single by Butler.
Newberry got its second good pitching performance on the day by sophomore
Josh Bookbinder. The Easley, S.C. native went five innings giving up one run on three hits and collect six strikeouts. Red-shirt junior
Jonathan Elicier than came in for two innings of relief, where he gave up one hit and record three strikeouts, to get the save.
The Wolves will play their home opener this Monday, Feb. 3 in another game against Belmont Abbey. First pitch is scheduled for 5 P.M.
