Third-ranked Railsplitters too much for Newberry

Conference leaders defeat Wolves 87-61

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's basketball team was barraged from start to finish Saturday afternoon by Lincoln Memorial and fell to 7-5 (3-3 South Atlantic Conference) with the 87-61 home defeat.

After the Wolves took a 2-0 lead on Marshall Lange's layup, the Railsplitters reeled off nine points in a row leading into the first media timeout, capped off by an Alex Dahling three pointer. The lead ballooned quickly as another three pointer by Dahling less than two minutes later gave Lincoln Memorial a 16-2 lead. The Railsplitters would lead by double digits for almost the entire rest of the contest.

Consecutive three pointers by Luke Gibson and Lange briefly cut the lead to eight points, but another deep three pointer by Dahling extended the lead back to 21-8. Both teams would score on their next several possessions before TJ Brown made a short jumper to cut the lead to 29-17 with less than seven minutes to play in the half. However, Devin Whitfield hit a three pointer on the very next possession to give the Railsplitters a 15 point lead. Whitfield was the game's high scorer with 32 points.

A Whitfield layup brought the margin to 34-17 before Marcus Ford hit his first three pointer of the contest to keep the Wolves within 14. Whitfield would respond, however, as he netted another three pointer on the ensuing possession. He then made a short jumper just over a minute later to give the Railsplitters their first 20 point lead at 41-20. Whitfield closed out the half with two more layups to keep the margin at 47-29 heading into halftime.

The second half started out poorly for Newberry as Whitfield hit consecutive three pointers to stretch the lead out to 53-29. On the following possession, QuanDaveon McCollum made his first career three pointer; then Lange hit another one to cut the lead to eighteen points. Right out of the Railsplitter timeout, Dahling hit yet another deep three pointer to extend the lead to 21 points, but McCollum answered with another three to keep the lead at 18.

Whitifield hit a three pointer with less than 15 minutes to play to keep the lead at 59-40, but the Wolves continued to battle hard. Another five points by McCollum trimmed to lead to 66-50 with 10 minutes left on the clock. Howeer, a barrage from Lincoln Memorial, including consecutive Dahling layups, pushed to lead to 27 points at 78-51 with less than seven minutes left, effectively ending the game.

The Wolves' bench saw significant time, and Jalen Johnson, Donnie Haith, and Tai Giger combined for the last eight points for Newberry. Haith's two free throws provided the final margin.

On a career night, McCollum made all three three pointers he attempted and finished with a team-high 11 points. Lange joined him in double figures with 10, while Luke Gibson and Marcus Ford finished with nine points each. South Atlantic Conference rebounding leader Angelo Sales, Jr. struggled on the evening and finished with eight points and three rebounds as the Railsplitter defense was focused on him all night long.

The Wolves will look to bounce back as they travel to Queens this coming Wednesday.
