Balanced offensive attack leads Newberry to blowout victory over Mars Hill

Five players in double figures; Kinard notches career-high in points

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's basketball team bounced back in dominate fashion with a 93-58 win over Mars Hill this afternoon.

It only took the Wolves 12 seconds into the game to take the lead and never look back as they ran away with the game. A layup by red-shirt freshman Erika Wiseley got it start for Newberry. Within the next 40 seconds Mars Hill scored their first point of the game with a free throw by De'Ja Marshall, who led all scorers with 26 points. On the next possession freshman Courtney Virgo drains a three to make it 5-1. A small 5-0 run by the Wolves increased their lead to 10-1 before Marshall of the Lions scored again with a jumper. Once again Newberry went on another run, this time 6-0, with again Marshall making a free throw to end their drought and the score being 16-4. The Wolves ended the quarter by scoring the final five points to make it 21-4 at the end of the first.

Newberry continued their run into the second by scoring the first seven points for a 12-0 run. With being down 28-6, Marshall of Mars Hill decided to take things into her own hand by scoring six of the next eight Lion's points. With 4:31 left until halftime, senior Kelsey McDermott makes a jumper to make it 33-12. The Lions were able to go on a mini run of 4-0 to try to cut into the Wolves lead, but then red-shirt sophomore Julie Kinard hits a three, on her way to a career-high 21 points, for a score of 36-16. After a Mars Hill jumper by Alexis Pardue, Kinard kept the hot hand going by scoring the next six points for Newberry. In the final minute of play before the break, the Lions outscored the Wolves 4-3 for a score of 45-22.

Mars Hill opened by the second half by scoring the first four points with jumpers by Marshall and Drew McMillan. A three by McDermott gave Newberry their first points of the second half, a minute and half into the third. After a layup by McMillan for the Lions, junior Talia Roberts hit back to back threes for the Wolves to bring their lead to 54-28. The next three and half minutes consist of the two sides going back and forth and trading points. With 1:54 left in the quarter, Newberry went on a 9-0 run to bring the lead to a 37 point difference. The Lions got the final points of the third when Kiara Johnson brought the ball pass half court and heaved a three point shot that went in before the buzzer to make it 75-41 heading into the final quarter.

Kinard got the first points of the quarter by driving down the lane for a layup, makes it while being fouled on the play and converting the and-one. One of the more positive things that went well for Mars Hill, in this game, was that they went on a 13-0 run and held Newberry scoreless for nearly five minutes of action to make the score 78-54. Junior Kelsey Brett ended the Wolves scoring drought with two free throws and then went on to score four of the next six Newberry points. In the final two minutes of the game, the Wolves outscored the Lions 7-4 to complete their blowout victory.
