NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves men's basketball team put on a shooting clinic Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena, making a season-high 19 three pointers and shooting nearly 50 percent from the field in a 104-71 drubbing of the Mars Hill Lions. With the victory, the Wolves move to 11-7 (7-5 SAC) on the season.
Angelo Sales, Jr. got Newberry off to a great start by draining his first shot attempt from behind the arc. The Lions quickly tied the score, but shortly thereafter, a
QuanDaveon McCollum layup and a
Luke Gibson three pointer gave the Wolves a lead they would never relinquish. Mars Hill got within one, but Gibson netted another three pointer. After another Lions basket, Newberry continued to bomb away from three point range as
TJ Brown and
Marcus Ford hit consecutive three pointers; then Ford hit a jumper to give the Wolves their first double digit lead of the game.
Gibson and Ford hit three pointers and then Sales, Jr. made a layup to extend the lead out to 14. After a made free throw by the Lions, Ford hit yet another three pointer to keep the pressure on. Another Ford three pointer and a three pointer by
Marshall Lange gave the Wolves a 20 point lead with six and a half minutes to play in the first half.
Callan Low then joined the three point parade before Brown hit yet another three pointer to give Newberry a 25 point lead. The teams traded buckets before a
Robin Bedford putback at the buzzer sent the Wolves into halftime with a 53-25 lead.
Newberry kept their foot on the gas pedal when the second half began as Lange hit a short jumper to give the Wolves a 30 point lead; then Sales, Jr. stole the ball and dunked. After a basket by the Lions, a Lange three pointer and layups by Brown and McCollum gave Newberry a 64-28 lead with 17 minutes to play. Gibson then hit his fourth three pointer to give the Wolves an insurmountable 67-30 lead with more than 16 minutes to play.
The teams traded baskets for a few minutes before Ford made a long two pointer to give Newberry a 40 point lead. Coach
Jason Taylor started to empty his bench from that point on and the reserves went wild. Bedford made a short shot before
Sikander Nielsen scored his only point of the game on a free throw. At the six minute mark,
Tai Giger began to make his imprint on the game as he made two free throws to give the Wolves an 83-46 lead. The Lions went on an 8-0 run before Giger made a three pointer. Another three pointer by Giger and two free throws by Low got Newberry to 91 points.
A
Jalen Johnson layup, a
Donnie Haith free throw, and three made free throw by Bedford got the Wolves within striking distance from 100 points. The crowd then went wild as Giger drained his third three pointer to give Newberry an even 100. Two made free throws by Giger and a layup by Haith closed the scoring for the afternoon.
