Wolves use huge third set run to defeat Rollins

Split their matches for the second consecutive day

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. - The Newberry volleyball team bounced back for the second straight day as they defeated Rollins College 3-1 after dropping the opening contest of the day to Shorter by the same score.

Trailing 24-18 in the third set, the Wolves stormed back with eight straight points to take the set 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead. This led into a back and forth fourth set that saw the Wolves win by a score of 25-23, with the final point coming on a Rollins service error.

The match started out well for Newberry, as they jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead. The set see-sawed back and forth several times, but the Wolves maintained their lead and won the set by a 25-21 margin. They were unable to carry that momentum into the second set, however, as Rollins scored the first five points and cruised throughout en route to a 25-11 second set victory, tying the match up at 1 apiece and leading into the pivotal third set.

Match standouts included freshman Katie Ullsperger, who led the Wolves' offensive attack with eight kills. Angela Gore and Zoe Dinkins were right behind her with seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman Avery Webb continued her strong start to her career with a program record six service aces. She breaks the record of five held by three different players. Webb also recorded a double double with 20 assists and 11 digs, showcasing her all-around abilities.

On the defensive side, Ullsperger and Morgan Walter led the team in digs with 16 each, and Kylee Kanealey had another excellent game at the net with three blocks. Zoe Dinkins and Sidra Triplett also had a strong day at the net with two blocks each.

In the first match of the day, Newberry struggled to get going in a back and forth first set, eventually falling by a margin of 25-19. The second set was off to a promising start as the Wolves got out to a 13-12 lead. However, the momentum shifted to Shorter's side as they won 11 consecutive points to take a 23-13 lead and eventually a 25-15 second set victory. The Wolves fought back in the third set, however, as they got out to a 13-4 lead and held on to win by a score of 27-25. The Wolves were unable to carry that momentum into the fourth set, as it was another back and forth affair that saw Newberry fall by a score of 25-20.

Standouts from the first match included Zoe Dinkins and Toni-Anne Whitlow, who had eight kills each. Katie Ullsperger chipped in with seven. From the service line, freshman Becca Hallingstad was excellent with three service aces, while Angela Gore had two and Avery Webb had one. Webb had 35 assists in the effort as well.

On the defensive side, Hallingstad and fellow freshman Chelsea Cole got into double figures in digs with 12 and 11, respectively, while Ullsperger added eight. Kylee Kanealey had an excellent match at the net as she recorded four blocks in a match for the second consecutive day, while Hallingstad and Zoe Dinkins added in two each.

The Wolves will have a four-day break before competing again on September 13 at Coker.
