ANDERSON, S.C. - The Newberry women's soccer team fall 3-1 to Anderson in South Atlantic Conference opener on Wednesday evening at the Civic Center Fields.
In the second half, Anderson took control of the match by possessing the ball and taking more shots than Newberry. The Wolves defense early on were able to stop multiple attacks. The Trojans finally were able score at the 69th minute and take a 2-1 lead. Anderson added to their lead with a goal that was mishandled by Newberry's keeper eight minutes later.
Less than a minute into the match, the Trojans keeper would be put to the test between the pipes. Forward
Daphne Heyaime, the leading goal scorer for the Wolves, took her first shot of the night. The keeper made the save and from that point both team took turns going back and forth on the pitch.
Newberry got on the board first in the 23rd minute. After a long from midfield by midfielder
Jacqueline Aldrete, Heyaime tracked down the ball and took a shot from 20 yards out to punch one in to the left side of the net. Almost ten minutes later, Heyaime and Aldrete each took shots within 30 seconds of each other with neither getting in the net.
Within the last four minutes of the first half, the Trojans generated four shots to try to tie the match. In the 44th minute, the Wolves committed a foul in the box giving Anderson a penalty kick. They were able to capitalize on their opportunity and drill their shot into the upper right corner of the net.
The Wolves will continue to be on the road as they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to play Carson-Newman on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 5:00 p.m.
