Wolves lose tough road matchup

Gant records career-high in saves

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry women's soccer team suffer a 1-0 defeat to Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at Harvey Stadium.

The Eagles recorded the first goal at the 32nd minute of the match. The shot came from the top of the box and dropped just over the reach of Wolves keeper Jayleen Gant into the net. Despite being outshot 27-4 by the Eagles, the Wolves only gave up the one goal on the afternoon, although there were numerous shots on goal.

Even with Gant giving up the one goal, she still had a productive afternoon in net. The junior Poway, Calif. native faced 12 shots that were on goal and recorded a career-high 11 saves. This was the fifth time in her career that she registered double digits saves.

Newberry's offense did not do much on the day, only getting four shots off, two on goal, with freshman Vanessa Baird leading the Wolves in shots. One of the best chances for Newberry came when senior Taylor Hiatt gained control of the ball in Wolves territory. She dribbled past three different Eagle defenders to about 10 yards in front of their net. Unfortunately she never got a shot off as a defender came from behind and kicked the ball away.

The Wolves will still be on the road as they travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to play Mount Olive next Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
