Strong second half lifts Wolves over Trojans

Marolaney scores first career goal

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team opened up South Atlantic Conference play against Anderson with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night at Civic Center Fields.

The Wolves re-took the lead in the match with a goal from freshman Liam Marolany. He deked the ball past the defender and then shot it past the keeper, while the ball was still in mid-air, to give Newberry a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute. Within the next three minutes the Wolves fired off four more shots, including a header that was saved by a Trojan defenseman.

Newberry tacked on one final goal to seal the win in the 85th minute. Sophomore Ibrahim Nadir gained control of the ball in the corner, beat three Anderson defenders, and dribbled toward the net. Nadir beat one last defender before lifting the ball over the keeper's head to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.

The Wolves got on the board first with a goal off a free kick. Junior Eric Brody kicked the ball toward the front of the net where sophomore Troy Paul headed it to the far post. The Trojans scored the equalizer in the 63rd minute off an own goal by the Wolves.

Freshman Leroy Zeller had a great night himself finishing the match with eight saves, including two tremendous saves by him in the 43rd and 67th minutes;  both times he punched the ball over the net.

The Wolves will continue on the road against Carson-Newman this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
