JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Carson-Newman Saturday night at Harvey Stadium.
The score was tied and looking like the match was going into a overtime play. A foul committed by Newberry changed that and led to the game winning goal. Carson-Newman had a free kick right outside the box on the left side of the net. Their was nothing the Newberry keeper could do but watch as the ball curved and go in the top right corner of the net.
The goal put the Eagles up 2-1 with 69 seconds left in the second half. They added one last goal 50 seconds later to put the finishing touch on the match. The Wolves' keeper got a little too aggressive coming up to mid-field to try to help the attack. The ball and a Eagles player got by the last line of defense to hit the empty netter to go up 3-1.
Newberry tied the match at one in the 54th minute off the foot of sophomore
Troy Paul. The Charlotte, N.C. native was able to secure the ball and dribble the ball toward the middle. From 25 yards out, he masterfully curved his shot and nailed it in the top left corner, as the keeper could do nothing but watch.
Carson-Newman was able to score right before halftime to take a 1-0 lead. The shot was taken from 15 yards out in the middle of the field in the 44th minute. The hot shot was rolling toward the keeper where he got his hand on it, but rolled off his finger tips straight into the net.
The Wolves will be home for the first time this season next Wednesday against Mount Olive at 5:30 p.m.
