Wolves start strong in home opener against Anderson

Newberry goes on to lose three straight sets

NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team started fast against Anderson by winning the first set, but were unable to capitalize on the early momentum and lost to the Trojans 3-1. Anderson dominated the match from the service line as they recorded 18 service aces to Newberry's nine.

In the first set, the Wolves got off to a slow start, falling behind 6-2. They recovered quickly, however, winning six of the last seven points to take an 8-7 lead. The Wolves and Trojans would battle from there, with neither team leading by more than two points at any other point in the set. Newberry went on to take an 18-15 lead, forcing the Trojans to call timeout. After said timeout, Anderson would battle back and tie the match at 25 before the Wolves won the last two points on an attack error and a service ace by Kylee Kanealey.

Although the Wolves would continue their first set momentum early, taking a 3-0 second set lead, they were unable to capitalize as the Trojans went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-5 lead. Newberry fought back to win the race to 15 and led 15-14, but Anderson went on a huge run yet again, this time of the 8-2 variety to take a 22-17 lead. They then won three of the next four points to take the set 25-18 and even the match at one set apiece.

After the break between sets, Anderson seized control of the match as they won eight of the first nine points in the third set to take an 8-1 lead. The Wolves battled hard, however, and even  took the lead at 17-15. The Trojans then won 10 of the next 12 points to take the set 25-19 and took the match lead at 2-1.

The fourth and final set started off poorly for the Wolves as they lost the first five points. Newberry was able to claw their way to four of the next six points to get within 7-4, but Anderson went on a huge run, which was aided by consecutive service aces. The Trojans won seven straight points to take a 14-4 lead and then won eight of the next nine points afterwards to take a 22-6 lead. Although the Wolves were able to win two straight points to get within 22-8, the Trojans hammered the nail down with three straight points to close out the set and the match.

The Wolves were led once again by Katie Ullsperger, who recorded double digit kills for the second straight contest with 10. She also added nine digs, two assists, and a service ace. Kylee Kanealey also had an excellent all-around match with seven kills, a team-leading three service aces, and a block. Other match standouts included Zoe Dinkins, who had nine kills and a team-leading three blocks, and Morgan Walter, who posted 15 digs and three service aces, tying Kanealey for the team lead. Sydney Diaz also had an excellent match defensively with a team-leading 16 digs.

Newberry will look to bounce back from their first home defeat against Lincoln Memorial on Friday, September 20th at 7 pm in Eleazer Arena.
