Wolves fall to Royals on the road

Newberry unable to get offense going in 6-0 loss

CHARLOTTE, N.C - Newberry fell to Queens in a South Atlantic Conference Carolinas matchup by a score of 6-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams traded possession in the opening minutes of the game. Neither team was able to find a rhythm until the Royals (2-2, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) took advantage of a counter attack play which led to their first goal at the 12th minute. The Wolves (1-1, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) looked to pressure the Royals' back line by cutting off passing lanes, but Queens was able to play out of pressure and move up the field quickly. The Royals were able to exploit the midfield by creating gaps in quick transitional situations. They dictated the first half, playing most of the game on the attacking side of the and capitalizing on two out of eight shots.

The Wolves were unable to find an offensive rhythm throughout the game and found themselves trailing 2-0 at the half before Queens pulled away with a pair of goals each in the third and fourth quarters. The Royals outshot Newberry 18-6 in all.

Although the Wolves didn't manage to find their attack on the day, they pushed forward late and found opportunities in the second half. Krystana Oyola and Amanda Sponaugle were able to attempt a clever play off a penalty corner in the 48th minute, but Queens Goalie Marit Noordham denied the shots from going in. Sponaugle continued to press forward taking three shots on goal in three minutes but was not able to find the back of the net.

Grace Lee recorded several important saves and the Wolves had two defensive saves coming from Alice Jackson and Chantel Gauthier.

The Wolves are 1-1 in their first two games of a five-game road swing during September. The Wolves will be traveling to Pennsylvania to face the fourth-ranked Millersville Marauders on Sept. 20.
