MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Newberry led No. 1 Millersville 1-0 entering the final quarter, but the Marauders countered with three goals over the final 11 minutes to take a 3-1 decision that was much closer than the final score would indicate.
The Wolves (1-2) found themselves in an all-out defensive battle against the top-ranked Marauders (5-0) in Millersville Pennsylvania, scoring an early goal and pitching a shutout for nearly 49 minutes before Millersville finally broke through against the Newberry defense.
Charlotte Bragard, a freshman goalkeeper from Belgium, earned her first career start for the Wolves and led her defense to an impenetrable performance throughout the first three quarters.
Bragard finished with 16 saves as she led her defensive unit through 23 penalty corners.

Alice Jackson dominantly withheld the Marauders from finding the back of the net, feeding of the intensity that Bragard set for her team. The Wolves remained organized and held shape throughout the contest. "Our defensive corner unit and goalkeeper faced several penalty corners and really held it down," stated head coach
Hannah Dave.
The defense finally gave way in the early stages of the fourth quarter when Kyra Brakersfield had the breakthrough goal for the Marauders. Millersville had three penalty corners in the early going, forcing Bragard to make a save and pushing a shot wide, before Brakersfield received a pass from Ashlynn Lennon and slotted a goal into the back of the cage to tie the score.
The Wolves looked up the field to fight back offensively but Millersville was able to pull away, controlling the ball in their offensive zone and taking the lead with six minutes remaining. The Marauders scored a cosmetic goal as time expired to double their advantage. Millersville peppered the Newberry defense throughout the game, taking 33 shots and placing 19 on frame.
Early in the game, the Wolves applied pressure to the Marauders' defense when opportunities arose.
Farai Kawonde was able to stretch the defense on the right flank as she utilized her speed to get past defenders, providing the Wolves with their first opportunity in the opening minutes of the game.

Mariah Lee who collected the pass and slotted in the cage. The Millersville defense was able to limit Newberry's scoring chances throughout the rest of the contest, however, allowing just three shots over the course of the game.
The Wolves are set to face nonconference foe Indiana University of Pennsylvania in their next road contest on Sunday, Sep. 22 at 12:00 p.m.
