Wolves settle for 2-2 draw

First tie since October 2018

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's soccer team registered a 2-2 draw with Barton on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry opened the match with a very fast pace. Within the first six minutes the Wolves took four shots, including a shot in the first 16 seconds. Almost six minutes later, Newberry kept the same tempo going leading up to their first goal of the match.

Redshirt sophomore Jacqueline Aldrete got the Wolves on the board with a chip over the keeper's head in the 13th minute. The Oxnard, Calif. native's 25-yard shot came after she received a pass from sophomore Monica Jimenez. Close to eight minutes later junior Emma Harms found the back of the net. Senior Daphne Heyaime made a great pass to Harms, who shot from the top of the box and the ball went through Barton keeper's hands to put Newberry up 2-0.

Heyaime almost scored another goal for the Wolves at the 22nd minute. Her shot not only bounced off one but both posts before the Bulldogs keeper picked up the ball.

The Barton offense continued pressing toward the end of the first half. They would be rewarded by scoring a goal with 31 seconds left in the half making it 2-1 heading into halftime. In the second half, the Bulldogs had their own fast pace tempo. With that and the momentum they gained at the end of the first half, Barton scored the equalizer with a shot from 20 yards out at the 70th minute.

In each overtime frames, both teams had ample opportunities to score, including Barton's 110th minute shot from 15 yards out that forced a Newberry save inside 10 seconds remaining. Neither team, however, was able to find the back of the net for a game winner.

The Wolves open up South Atlantic Conference play with Anderson on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5:00 p.m.
