CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Newberry men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 19 Queens Saturday afternoon at the Howard Levine Tennis Center.
The Wolves (9-13, 3-5 SAC) started the match right as
Edison Ambarzumjan and
Enrico Haas won their doubles match, defeating No. 27 team of Paolo Bompieri and Joel Dunlap by a 7-5 score. Newberry was close in clinching the doubles point but the team of
Jose Navarro and
Sean Nguyen were edged out by the No. 48 team of Agustin Aran Martin and Julian Bosch by a 7-6 score.
Ambarzumjan carried his momentum into his singles, defeating Martin in two sets. The win did not come easily for Ambarzumjan as Martin was edged out 7-6 in the first set. Martin was able to hang tough in the second set but Ambarzumjan came away with a 7-5 win and the victory.
Navarro had a challenging day himself, going to three sets with Bosch. Navarro was able to edge past Bosch in the first set with a 7-6 win. Bosch was able to get the better of Navarro in the second set, winning 6-1 and forcing the deciding set. In the final set, Navarro came away with the 10-4 win and the victory.
Nguyen was close in coming away with a singles win on the day, falling to Bompieri in three sets. Nguyen was able to get a close first set, winning 7-6, Bompieri battled back in the second set, winning 6-4. In the final set, Bompieri was able to get the 10-6 win.
The Wolves return home this Tuesday for their final home match of the season as they take on Catawba at 2 p.m.
