Cunningham's grand slam and Daley's complete game give Newberry the sweep over Catawba

Newberry completes a seven-run comeback in Game One on a grand slam homer from Cunningham

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Wolves would complete an incredible comeback in Game One on a grand slam home run by Chelsey Cunningham and used a complete game pitching performance by Selice Daley to sweep the Catawba Indians on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.

Newberry advances to 29-13 and 11-7 in the SAC, taking sole-possession of first place in the standings. Catawba drops to 22-19 and 9-9 in the SAC.

Game One (Newberry wins 12-10 vs. Catawba)
Newberry came out as victors in Game One in one of the most dramatic games for the Wolves this season.

Catawba would take the biggest lead of the game at 9-2 after the end of the third inning. From there it was all Newberry as the Wolves put together an incredible comeback to win the game.

Haley Simonds added one run in the fourth inning with a solo home run. The Wolves would rally for four-runs in the fifth inning despite starting the inning off with two outs.

McKenzie Barneycastle reached safely on an infield single to third as Simonds followed by earning a walk. Hannah Davis doubled to center field to score one run and move Simonds to third.

Julia Bomhardt extended the scoring as she reached safely on an infield single to second base, scoring one run and moving Davis to third. Reagan Glanz followed with a two-RBI single to center field as the Wolves trimmed the Catawba lead to 9-7.

Catawba would score one run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, extending their lead to 10-7.

Ivy Hayes, who entered the game as a relief pitcher in the fifth, would allow only one hit by Catawba in the sixth inning as the Wolves remained within striking distance as they headed to the seventh.

Newberry started the top of the seventh inning with a groundout followed by a walk granted to Simonds. A fly-out put the Catawba Indians only one out away from winning Game One. The Wolves had other plans as the team would pull off a miraculous rally despite being down to their final out.

Tori Caldwell gave the Wolves some speed as she entered the game to pinch run for Simonds. Bomhardt reached safely on a bunt-single to third base as Caldwell advanced to second. A base-hit by Glanz would load the bases for the Wolves as Rachel Marion entered the game to pinch-hit.

Marion would take a 2-2 count before taking two straight pitches as balls to earn a walk and score a run for the Wolves.

With the bases still loaded, designated player Chelsey Cunningham would make one of the biggest moments of her career as she hit a grand slam home run to left center, giving Newberry their first lead of the game at 12-10.

Selice Daley would close out the game, striking out one batter as she picked up the save.

Hayes would earn the win for the Wolves as she provided two innings of pitching only giving up one run on three hits.

Davis, Glanz, and Cunningham all earned multiple-RBI's as Davis and Bomhardt both went 3-for-4 in the game.

Game Two (Newberry wins 5-2 vs. Catawba)
Game Two of the doubleheader couldn't have been any different than Game One as both teams faced off in a pitcher duel.

Daley, who picked up the save in Game One, earned the start in Game Two and provided six scoreless innings. The ace would pitch a complete game, giving up only two runs on four hits.

Both teams would remain without a hit until the third inning when Cunningham connected on a single up the middle of the field.

The Wolves would score the first run of the game in the following inning as Barneycastle doubled to left center and scored on a base-hit from Simonds. Newberry's 1-0 lead would hold until the seventh inning where the team extended their lead.

Davis started the inning off with a double through the left side. Glanz reached on a fielding error to put runners on the corners for Newberry.

Marion would pinch-hit next for the Wolves as the junior provided her second outstanding at-bat of the day by connecting for a two-RBI double down the left field line.

Two stolen bases by Ashley Willis, who reentered the game for Marion, and Cunningham would give the Wolves two runners in scoring position. Barneycastle would then pick up her second hit of the inning on a bunt-single to load the bases for Natalie Willis.

The senior shortstop would drive in two runs with a single to left field as Newberry would hold a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh.

Daley remained strong in the circle for the Wolves as she closed out the game with three straight outs after giving up two runs.

Daley picked up her 11th win of the season, striking out six batters and only giving up two runs on four hits in her third complete seven-inning game of the season.
