ROCK HILL – The Newberry men's golf team has placed three golfers on the South Atlantic Conference's all-conference teams, with
Harry Bolton and
Ben Thompson earning second team honors while
Adrian Villiger was named honorable mention.
It is the third consecutive season that Newberry has placed three golfers on the SAC All-Conference team. Bolton and Thompson have each earned selections in years prior, with Thompson earning the distinction for the third consecutive year.
Bolton, a senior, is playing the best golf of his career with a stroke average of 72.96 through 23 rounds. He's earned three top five finishes this season as well as three top 10 finishes, moving his career totals to seven top five finishes and 11 top 10 finishes.
His seven top five finishes is tied for fifth in program history, while his 11 top 10 finishes has him in seventh in program history according to available records. Thompson's improvement this season also has him in a tie for fifth in program history in career scoring average, with a stroke average of 73.81 through four years.
Thompson, who is also tied with Bolton in career-scoring average, has played the best golf of his Newberry career as well. The senior has improved from a 74.14 stroke average in 2017-18 to a team-best 72.78 in the 2018-19 season.
After a stellar second round score of 68 (-4), Thompson was able to collect the first tournament win of his career at The Trojan hosted by Mount Olive, leading the Wolves to a team victory as well. Along with his first ever tournament win, Thompson has earned two top five finishes and two top ten finishes this season, pushing his career totals to seven top five finishes and 10 top 10 finishes.
Thompson's seven top five finishes is tied with Bolton for fifth in program history, while his ten top 10 finishes slots him at eighth overall. Newberry's two seniors, Bolton and Thompson, also share identical career scoring averages of 73.81.
Villiger rounds out the honors for the Wolves this season, earning his first career selection to the All-SAC team as an honorable mention. The sophomore had a solid season in his first year of play for Newberry, recording a scoring average of 73.30 through 23 rounds and a win-loss percentage of .772, tied for second best on the team.
His play earned him one top five finish and two top 10 finishes this season, highlighted by a second-place finish at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate tournament at Lenoir-Rhyne in October, leading the team to a second overall finish.
The Wolves will look to keep their season on track as they compete at the South Atlantic Conference Championship in Camden from April 14-16.
