CENTRAL – It didn't take long for Newberry to return to its winning ways.
A day after seeing its 13-game winning streak come to an end with a loss at No. 5 Mount Olive, Newberry rebounded with a convincing 17-3 road win at Southern Wesleyan.
The Wolves (17-5) dominated the game from start to finish, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on the Warriors (8-10) in the first inning and never looking back. Newberry scored three or more runs in four separate innings as the Wolves pulled away steadily.
Colin Allman, who missed 13 games before being reinserted into the starting lineup Tuesday, paced the offense with his first three-hit day of 2019. The junior shortstop and preseason all-region selection went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI's, and two runs scored.
Danton Hyman also finished with two hits, extending his reached base streak to 29 games. He set the tone with a first-pitch single into left field to open the game and blasted a two-run triple in the fourth. He has hit safely in nine consecutive games, the longest active streak on the team.
Nick Butler and
Zane Tarrance had a hit apiece to extend their reached-base streaks to 15 and 12 games, respectively.
Tyler Fuhr earned the win in a predetermined split, working three scoreless innings on a pitch count to begin the game.
Quinton Driggers recorded three strikeouts in two hitless innings on the mound.
Beau Thompson pitched the final four frames to close out the victory.
The Warriors, meanwhile, were forced to use eight pitchers during the contest, none of whom pitched longer than two innings. Starter Tyler Parry was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits through 0.2 innings.
Newberry travels to Coker on Friday afternoon to open a South Atlantic Conference series. First pitch Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. with a Saturday twinbill scheduled for noon.
