NEWBERRY – The Newberry women's tennis team took care of Mars Hill Friday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 victory at the Oakland Tennis Center.
The Wolves (12-8, 2-4 SAC) came out hot in doubles action, taking all three matches. Elsia Aguirre and
Marta Gomar took care of the team of Evan Lake and Julianne Launay with a 6-3 win.
Lucy Spice and
Frederike Klein rusied past Sophia Pelaez and Haley Steinkamp with a 6-1 victory.
Amy Griffiths and
Lucia Davila rounded out the doubles action with a 6-2 winover Emma Horner and Victoria Franklin.
Newberry carried over their momentum into the singles matches were they went 4-2 on the day. Aguirre defeated Launay in two sets with scores of 6-0, 6-3. Klein continued her hot play, getting the match win over Lake. Klein came away with 6-3, 6-2 set win to take the match
Spice was able to take care of Franklin with consecutive 6-1 set wins to take the match.
Lucia Davila rounded out play with a victory over Franklin. Davila posted set scores of 6-0, 6-3 to take the match.
Gomar had a commanding lead over Pelaez with a 6-2 win in the first set. Up 5-3 in the second set, Gomar's day ended due to injury, giving Pelaez the win by retirement.
The Wolves will continue their home stand as they host No. 44 Lenoir-Rhyne next Tuesday at 2 p.m.
