NEWBERRY – No. 22 Newberry dominated in all facets of the game in a 20-1 rout over Anderson in Friday night's South Atlantic Conference series opener.
Newberry's (25-7, 9-1 SAC) astounding run of success at the Smith Road Complex continued as the Wolves pushed their record to a sterling 17-0, the second-best home record in all three NCAA classifications behind Division I Arizona State's 19-0 record.
In the process, Newberry scored its sixth consecutive win and eighth victory in the last nine games. The Wolves also remained atop the SAC standings, with four of the top five teams in the league earning series-opening wins on the evening.
The Wolves excelled offensively, scoring three or more runs in five different innings, including seven runs in the third, on their way to their third-highest scoring day in SAC play in school history. They excelled defensively, turning three double plays and not skipping a beat when waves of substitutions threatened continuity. And they excelled on the mound, with a superb start from
Charlie Fessler and two perfect innings of relief from
Beau Thompson.
Fessler worked seven innings in the winning effort, improving his record to 3-3 and lowering his ERA to 2.89, the fifth-lowest in the conference among regular starters. He had three strikeouts and issued a single walk while scattering seven hits. The Trojans (11-17, 2-8 SAC) went six up, six down for Thompson over the final two innings.
But the story of the day was the offense. Eight of nine starting position players contributed to Newberry's total of 19 hits, the second-highest total of the season and the most hits by a Newberry team in SAC play in two years. The 20 runs scored were tied for the third-most in school history in a SAC contest.
Six players finished with multiple hits and six had at least two RBI's.
Danton Hyman, who extended his reached-base streak to 39 games dating back to last season, led in both categories with three hits and a career-high four RBI's.
Tyler White continued his recent torrid pace at the plate with a 2-for-3 day with two runs scored and three batted in. White's batting average has climbed from .182 to .403 over the last month as the Chapin native has hit a team-best .491 (27-for-55) with 23 RBI's in the last 16 games, recording at least one hit in 15 of them. He has an on-base percentage of .569 and has slugged .800 with seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs in the stretch.
White extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while
Dalton Lansdowne upped his to a team-best 13 games.
Tyler Ackard, taking over for White in the fifth in just his second appearance in the lineup since March 12, had a hit to reach base for the 15th consecutive game.
Newberry wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning with run-scoring hits from White and
Nick Butler. Hyman's single in the second plated an unearned run in the second before the Wolves needed just three hits to score seven runs in the third, taking advantage of two Trojan errors and three walks in the inning. The Wolves tacked on three runs apiece over the next three frames for the final tally.
Newberry and Anderson conclude their season series with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 p.m.
