Wolves fall to No. 8 Lander at home

Ambarzumjan wins in three sets

NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's tennis team fell to the No. 8 ranked Lander Bearcats at home, losing by a team score of 5-2.

The Wolves (7-10) were led by Edison Ambarzumjan who earned a victory in a three-set slugfest with Lander's Axel Cronje. Ambarzumjan gave up the first set 6-4, but stormed back with a 6-3 victory in set two before sealing his win with a tough 10-7 win in the deciding third set.

Sean Nyugen was also able to secure a victory for the Wolves, prevailing over Lander's Gabriel Couto, finishing him off in two sets. Nyugen edged out Couto 7-5 in set one, while defeating his counterpart 6-4 in the second set to secure the victory.

Newberry was unable to get much traction in the remaining matches, with a powerful Bearcats squad cleaning up the remaining sets. Jose Navarro fell in two sets to Ozan Cildir, dropping the first set 6-3 before being edged out 6-4 in the second set.

Enrico Haas nearly took the first set for Newberry, but was narrowly defeated 7-6 by Tommaso Rossin. Haas struggled to recover in the second set, falling 4-1 to close out his match.

Alex Amble struggled to get going early on, dropping the first set to Thomas De Nigri 6-0. He improved in the second outing, but would go on to lose the second set 6-3.

Lawrence Friedland wrapped up the day for the Wolves, falling in both sets to Philippe Courteau by identical scores of 6-1.
