Dunklee's six goals propel Wolves past Coker

Newberry picks up their first conference win of the season

HARTSVILLE – The Newberry men's lacrosse team picked up their first conference win of the season behind Kyle Dunklee's six goal, beating Coker 17-12 Wednesday night.
 
To go along with Dunklee's six goals, the Wolves (7-2, 1-1 SAC) were led offensively by Dylan Mansur as head added on five goals. Brady Kearnan had two goals while Stone Boone, Jeremy Ross, Justin Messersmith and Zachary Sunderland tacked on one goal each.
 
Kearnan was a great facilitator on the offensive end as he had five assists in the game. Sunderland had two assists while Ross and Sunderland had one assist each.
 
The Cobras got out to a quick 1-0 before Dunklee and Mansur found the back of the net to give Newberry the 2-1 lead. Coker went on a 3-0 lead to make it 4-2 with just over two minutes in the first quarter. Dunklee tacked on two more goals late in the quarter to draw even at 4-4. Ethan Irizarry added a goal for the Cobras in the final minute to take the 5-4 lead after the first quarter.
 
Coker opened up their lead in the second quarter, going in a 3-0 run to make it 8-4 with under ten minutes until halftime. Messersmith halted the run with Newberry stringing together four goals to make it 8-8 all. Joe Venazio added a goal late in the quarter to make it 9-8. This would be the Cobras last lead of the game as Mansur made it 9-9 going into halftime.
 
The Wolves came out firing in the second half to take an 11-9 lead. Coker would draw even with 13:01 left in the game making it 12-12. Newberry ended the game on a 5-0 run to put the game on ice including two goals from Dunklee just :50 apart.
 
Erick Szurley led the team on the defensive end, picking up eight ground balls. Dan Sullivan added five ground balls with Jacob Katopol picking up three more. Sullivan wrecked havoc for the Cobras in the defensive end, causing five turnovers with Szurley causing three, respectively.
 
Szurley got the win in net, playing in 45:00 in relief of Colton Clingan. Szurley made 10 saves on 17 shots faced to get the win.
 
The Wolves will be back home this Saturday as they take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 3 p.m. at Setzler Field.
