DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – The Newberry Wolves (2-3) traveled down the coast to the Sunshine State to take on the Embry-Riddle Eagles (3-1), ultimately falling to the home team by a score of 22-6.
The Wolves fell behind big early, as the Eagles poured on a 10-0 scoring run in the first nine minutes of the game, setting the tone for what would be a long day for Newberry.
Chloe Wood finally got the Wolves on the board with an unassisted goal with 21 minutes remaining in the first half, but another 3-0 Eagles run would follow, widening the gap between the two teams.
At the halftime break, the Wolves trailed the Eagles by a score of 16-3. The Wolves needed a massive second frame to get back in the game, and although they improved, they couldn't catch up to a talented Eagles team.
Wood scored one goal in the second half and
Sophie Moore tacked on two of her own, with both players finishing with a hat trick to account for all of Newberry's scoring.
Rachel Dillon led the way for the Wolves with two assists on the day.
The Wolves defense stiffened in the second half, allowing just six goals compared the 16 allowed in the first half, and when the final horn sounded, Embry-Riddle prevailed by the final score of 22-6.
The Eagles dominated the shot count, outdoing the Wolves by a total of 39-10, including a 30-8 shot on goal margin. They also outdid the Wolves in the circle, winning draw controls by a margin of 20-9.
Newberry returns home for their next game, taking on the Wilmington Wildcats on Wednesday, March 6 at 3:30 pm at Setzler Field.
