NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves (10-18, 5-15 SAC) were looking for a win in the final game of the regular season, but were unable to keep up with the stellar shooting of the Carson-Newman Eagles (15-13, 8-12 SAC), falling by a score of 89-78.
Angelo Sales Jr., who scored a career-high 42 points against Coker on Wednesday, put up 19 points on 7-11 shooting tonight to lead the Wolves.
Three other Newberry players finished in double figures, with
Marshall Lange scoring 14,
Tai Giger scoring 13, and
TJ Brown contributing 10. Brown also tied for the team-high in rebounds on the day with six.
The Eagles saw a solid outing from volume shooter Malik Abraham, who led all scorers with 23 points on 8-15 shooting, including 7-14 from long range. Three other players scored in double figures for the Eagles as they combined to shoot 54.7 percent from the floor for the game.
As it was the last game and last home game of the regular season, senior guard
Jamaal Satisfield was honored during pregame and given the start. He logged 23 minutes, scoring seven points on 2-4 from the floor, as well as two rebounds and two steals to close out his Newberry career.
As a team, Newberry converted on 41.8 percent of its shots, connecting on 11 three-pointers throughout the night. Giger led the way from long range, hitting on 4-8 of his deep balls.
The Eagles held the advantage on the boards by a margin of 35-32, while the Wolves forced more turnovers, causing 11 to Carson-Newman's nine.
The Wolves finish the regular season at ninth in the South Atlantic Conference standings, finishing three games back of making the SAC Tournament. Thus, this was the final game of the 2018-19 regular season, and head coach
Dave Davis will enter the offseason graduating only one player from its current roster.
