HARSTVILLE - The Newberry men's tennis team fell to Coker, 5-2 at the Coker Tennis Courts for their first conference win in program history.
The Wolves (7-9, 1-3 SAC) were led by
Edison Ambarzumjan who had a hard fought battle against Melwin Krall as they went to three sets. Ambarzumjan fell in the first set 6-2 before turning the tables in the final two sets. Ambarzumjan won the second set 6-3 and crusied in the third set 6-1.
Sean Nguyen got the Wolves other win on the afternoon, defeating Justus Lehmann. Nguyen had his hands full with Lehmann as he was pushed to the limits but prevailing 7-6 in both sets to take the match.
Jose Navarro was on the brink of victory before Hunter Horton was able to edge him out. Navarro won the first set 6-4 before Horton got away with consecutive 7-6 set wins to take the match.
Lawrence Friedland was in a similar situation as Navarro as he was able to take Gonzalo-Saul to three sets. Gonzalo-Saul won the first set 6-4 before Friedland was able to get the second set 6-2. Friedland battled in the third set but Gonzalo-Saul was able to take the third set 6-4.
Newberry will be back in action this Thursday as they take on No. 8 Lander at 2 p.m. at the Oakland Tennis Courts.
